A booster is a supplement you add on top of a complete base feed to push one specific outcome, usually bigger, denser flowers. It is not a base and it will never replace one. The honest rule from our nutrients guide holds here: a strong base run at full dose beats a shelf of half-used boosters every time. Add these when your grow asks for them, not before.
What a booster is, and the rule that saves you money
A base nutrient feeds the plant the full set of elements it needs from seedling to harvest. A booster sits on top and nudges one job: more flower density, stronger stems, a calmer root zone. Keeping that distinction clear stops most wasted money, because a booster with no complete base behind it is seasoning with no meal.
New growers stack five bottles onto a cheap base and wonder why the plants still look hungry. Spend on a quality base first, run it at full dose, and only then reach for a supplement you can name a reason for. Two or three boosters chosen for your water and your stage will out-perform a cabinet of eight you dip into at random.
Boosters only earn their place on top of a complete base feed. This collection is part of our Nutrients & Additives guide, which covers how it fits the rest of your setup.
The four booster families and when each earns its place
PK and bloom boosters add extra phosphorus and potassium to build flower density through the back half of flowering. Use them in peak bloom, not in veg, and follow the label dose because it is easy to overshoot. We stock the mainstays: Advanced Nutrients Big Bud, General Hydroponics Liquid KoolBloom, House & Garden Top Booster and Emerald Harvest King Kola.
Cal-mag corrects calcium and magnesium, and it is worth running on almost every grow when your water is soft. On reverse-osmosis or soft tap water it is essential, because soft water carries little or no calcium and magnesium for the plant to draw on. Add roughly 150 to 200 ppm before your base. General Hydroponics CALiMAGic, Advanced Nutrients Sensi Cal-Mag and Roots Organics Elemental all do this job.
Carbohydrates and amino acids feed the microbes in the root zone and help the plant hold up through heat or transplant stress. They are support, not yield in a bottle. Advanced Nutrients Bud Candy and B-52 sit in this family.
Silica strengthens cell walls for sturdier stems and better resistance to heat and pests. Add it in veg and into early flower, and always mix it into the water first, before anything else, because it can react with other parts if you rush. Advanced Nutrients Rhino Skin and Emerald Harvest Sturdy Stalk cover this.
Do not double up: adding boosters without wrecking the balance
The fastest way to turn boosters into a problem is to double an element the plant already has. Most bloom boosters and many bases carry potassium; stack two PK products at once and you can push potassium high enough to lock out calcium and magnesium, so the plant starves in a full tank. Read the label of everything in your reservoir and add up what overlaps.
The safe pattern is simple. Stay inside one brand family where you can, because the maker has balanced its boosters against its own base and worked out the doses for you. Heavy 16 and Roots Organics both build their ranges this way. Add one new booster at a time, watch the plant for a few days, and mix in order: silica and cal-mag into the water first, base next, boosters after, and correct pH last.

Frequently asked questions
Do boosters replace a base nutrient?
No. A booster tops up one outcome, usually flower density, on top of a complete base feed. Run a strong base at full dose first, then add boosters only when your grow asks for them.
When do I add a PK or bloom booster?
In peak bloom, through the back half of flowering, to build flower density. Follow the label dose and do not run two PK products at once, or you risk pushing potassium high enough to lock out calcium and magnesium.
Which booster should I buy first?
If your water is reverse-osmosis or soft tap, cal-mag comes first. Add roughly 150 to 200 ppm before your base. After that, a bloom booster when you flower, then grow the stack only as your results ask for it.
