Propagation is where a grow is won or lost, and the media you root into does most of the quiet work. A good starter plug holds moisture and air in balance around a fragile new root, so seeds germinate evenly and cuttings strike fast. Pick the right medium for your method and the rest gets easier.

What a starter plug does, and the three types worth stocking

A young root needs two things at once: steady moisture and plenty of air. Too wet and it rots before it forms; too dry and it never gets going. Every product here is a way of holding that balance around a seed or a fresh cutting while the root system builds.

Three families cover almost every grower. Rockwool (Grodan cubes, blocks and slabs) is spun mineral fiber with an excellent air-to-water ratio and a firm grip on the stem. Peat and composted plugs in the Root Riot and Rapid Rooter style are gentle, biodegradable and ready to plant into any system. Foam collars are the soft neoprene inserts that suspend a cutting in an aeroponic cloner such as EZ-Clone, where the bare stem sits in open air and is misted from below.

Starter media is where the root zone begins. This collection is part of our Growing Media & Containers guide, which covers how it fits the rest of your setup.

Condition your rockwool, then size up as the roots grow

One rule separates growers who swear by rockwool from those who give up on it: it is naturally alkaline, so it must be pH-conditioned before use. Soak fresh cubes for several hours in water adjusted to around pH 5.5 to bring the media into the band a young root can feed in. Skip this and even a strong cutting stalls in a soaked, high-pH block.

Sizing follows the roots, not the calendar. Start a seed or cutting in a small starter plug, move it into a block once roots show at the sides, then set that block onto a slab for the final run. Grodan’s range steps up in exactly this order, from mini plugs to Gro-Blocks to full slabs, so the plant is never sitting in more wet media than it can drink. Peat plugs need no conditioning: dampen and plant. A rooting gel or powder on the cut end seals the wound and feeds the first roots, lifting your strike rate on stubborn cuttings.

The propagation environment, and keeping it clean

A plug only performs inside the right environment. Fresh cuttings have no roots to draw water, so they drink through the leaf until roots form, which means high humidity for the first week or so. A humidity dome over a tray holds that moisture, and a heat mat underneath keeps the root zone in the low-to-mid 70s°F, where rooting is fastest. Super Sprouter build the domes, trays and mats for exactly this, and Jump Start heat mats do the same work under a tray.

Damping-off is the one failure that takes out a whole tray at once, a fungal rot that strikes seedlings at the media line in stagnant, over-wet conditions. Crack the dome vents for airflow, use clean trays and fresh plugs every time, and never let water pool in the tray. Clean tools and clean media prevent it far more reliably than any treatment cures it.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to soak rockwool before use?

Yes. Rockwool is alkaline straight out of the wrapper, so soak it for a few hours in water adjusted to about pH 5.5 before you plant. Conditioned cubes root quickly; unconditioned ones will stall a healthy cutting.

Rockwool or peat plugs for a beginner?

Peat and composted plugs like Root Riot are the easier start: no conditioning, gentle on young roots and ready to plant. Rockwool gives more control once you are comfortable managing pH and watering.

What do I need for a propagation setup?

A tray, a humidity dome and a heat mat cover the essentials. The dome holds humidity around leafless cuttings and the mat warms the root zone, which is where a Super Sprouter kit earns its place.
