Two pumps do the quiet work in almost every hydroponic setup. A water pump moves nutrient solution around the system, and an air pump drives oxygen into the reservoir. Get both sized right and roots stay fed and healthy; get either wrong and yield suffers whatever your nutrients cost.
Two jobs: moving solution and oxygenating the reservoir
A water pump is the circulation heart of the system. It lifts nutrient solution out of the reservoir and keeps it moving, which is what a fountain, ebb and flow, drip or top-feed setup depends on. No flow means stagnant roots and patchy feeding.
An air pump does a different job. It pushes air down a line to a stone or disc in the reservoir, and the fine bubbles dissolve oxygen into the water. That dissolved oxygen keeps roots white and healthy in deep water culture and any recirculating system. In DWC it is what keeps the plant alive.
Most grows need both, and EcoPlus covers each side: Eco fixed-flow and Elite pressure pumps for solution, Eco Air and Commercial Air pumps with Hydrovescent stones and discs for oxygen.
Pumps are one part of a working system. This collection is part of our Hydroponic Systems & Water Management guide, which covers how it fits the rest of your setup.
Sizing a water pump: flow and head height together
The mistake almost everyone makes is buying on flow alone. A pump rated 1000 GPH only hits that at zero lift. Push water upward and flow drops, so at the top of a tall system you may have half the figure on the box. That vertical lift is the head height, and it costs you flow.
So size on two numbers. Work out the flow you need at the plants, then read the pump’s flow at your head height, not its headline rating. EcoPlus prints a flow-versus-height curve; use it, and leave a margin for bends and fittings.
| Job | What to size for |
|---|---|
| Fountain / small top-up | Modest flow; prioritize quiet running |
| Ebb & flow tray | Enough flow to flood the tray in a few minutes |
| Drip / top-feed | Flow at your real head height, not rated GPH |
| Recirculating reservoir | Turn the reservoir over a few times per hour |
Then pick the body. A submersible pump sits in the reservoir, runs quiet and cools itself, and suits most grows. An inline pump mounts outside the tank and pushes against higher head and longer runs, which is where the EcoPlus Elite jet and multistage pumps and Hydro-Logic pressure pumps earn their place. Many EcoPlus Eco pumps convert between the two.
Sizing the air pump to your reservoir and stones
Match the air pump to the volume of water it has to oxygenate and the number of outlets you run. A working guide is at least 1 liter of air per minute for every gallon or two of reservoir in deep water culture, and more in a warm room, since warm water holds less oxygen. An eight-outlet manifold needs a pump built to feed eight stones, not a single-outlet unit stretched thin.
The stone matters as much as the pump. A fine stone or a Hydrovescent disc breaks the air into small bubbles with far more surface area, dissolving much more oxygen than big bubbles off an open tube. EcoPlus Eco Air pumps cover single tanks up to small multi-site setups; Commercial Air pumps drive banks of stones in larger reservoirs.
Two practical notes. Buy for quiet and reliability: an air pump runs 24 hours a day for the whole grow, and a failure takes your roots with it. And fit a non-return (check) valve on the line, so reservoir water cannot siphon back and flood the pump if it stops.

Frequently asked questions
Submersible or inline?
A submersible pump sits in the reservoir, runs quiet and cools itself, which is fine for most grows. An inline pump mounts outside and pushes harder against greater height and long runs.
How do I choose an air pump?
Match it to reservoir volume and the number of stones. Allow around 1 liter of air per minute per gallon or two of water in DWC, and fit a check valve to stop back-siphoning.
