CANNA Start is a balanced one-part nutrient solution formulated specifically for seedlings and rooted cuttings. Unlike diluted vegetative nutrients, CANNA Start delivers the exact ratio of macro and micronutrients that young plants need during the propagation phase — preventing both overfeeding and nutrient yellowing. It works across a wide range of propagation substrates including rockwool plugs, coco pellets, jiffy plugs, and peat-based seed mixes, and integrates directly into the full CANNA growing program after transplant.

Why Choose CANNA Start
Seedlings and freshly rooted cuttings are the most vulnerable plants in any grow operation. At this stage, the root system is either nonexistent or very shallow, and nutrient uptake capacity is limited compared to an established plant in active vegetative growth. Using a standard vegetative nutrient — even at a reduced dose — during this window creates two separate problems that CANNA Start is designed to solve.
The first problem is overfeeding. A full-strength A+B base nutrient contains significantly more nitrogen, potassium, and mineral salts than a seedling or fresh cutting can process. High EC values in the root zone cause osmotic stress: water is drawn out of roots rather than absorbed, which stunts growth and can kill young cuttings outright. CANNA Start is formulated with a lower nutrient load matched to the actual demand of propagating plants, so the maximum-dose EC tops out at 1.3 mS/cm total — a level well within the tolerance of even the most sensitive seedlings.
The second problem is micronutrient imbalance. Diluting a standard vegetative nutrient to reduce its EC does not produce the right macro-to-micro ratio for early-stage plants. Phosphorus and some micronutrients become proportionally insufficient when you simply water down a formula built for mature plants. CANNA Start is a purpose-built 2-1-2 formula that delivers the correct balance of primary, secondary, and trace elements for the propagation stage without requiring any mixing or dilution math.
A third practical advantage is simplicity. CANNA Start is a single-bottle solution — no separate part A and part B to mix, no risk of forgetting one component or adding them out of order. For a propagation bench where dozens or hundreds of small cubes or plugs need feeding, this reduces handling time and the potential for errors significantly.
- One-part formula: All primary, secondary, and micronutrients in a single bottle — no A+B mixing required at any point during the propagation phase.
- Prevents overfeeding: Formulated for the lower nutrient demand of seedlings and cuttings; maximum EC of 1.3 mS/cm keeps salt stress out of the root zone.
- Prevents yellowing: The 2-1-2 NPK ratio provides the correct micro and macro element balance for early-stage plants; diluting a vegetative nutrient does not achieve the same profile.
- Bridges to the full CANNA program: After transplant to the final growing medium, growers switch directly to the appropriate CANNA Vega nutrient (TERRA, COCO, SUBSTRA, or AQUA) with no compatibility gap.
- Wide substrate compatibility: Works across rockwool, coco pellets, jiffy plugs, peat-based seed mixes, and most other propagation media without formulation adjustments.
Best Uses for CANNA Start
CANNA Start is designed for a specific window in the plant’s life cycle: from germination or cutting through to the point of transplant into the final growing medium. Outside of that window, a different CANNA nutrient is more appropriate. Within that window, CANNA Start covers a range of common propagation setups.
- Germinating seeds in plugs or seed mixes: Seeds germinated in jiffy plugs, rockwool cubes, or peat-based propagation trays benefit from a low-EC nutrient solution once the first true leaves appear. CANNA Start provides the nutrients needed to build a healthy root system from the first watering without overwhelming a seedling that has only just emerged.
- Rooting cuttings in rockwool or coco: Growers who propagate their own cuttings in rockwool starter cubes or coco pellets use CANNA Start to support the plant through the rooting phase. During this period the cutting is drawing on its stored reserves while new roots form, and a low but correctly balanced nutrient feed helps maintain leaf colour and structural integrity until roots become visible at the cube edges.
- Hardening off before transplant: Once cuttings or seedlings have rooted but before they move into their final medium (whether soil, coco, or a hydroponic slab), CANNA Start continues to provide gentle nutrition during the transition period. Maintaining consistent pH (5.2–6.2) and low EC (under 1.3 mS/cm) during this window reduces transplant shock.
- Small-pot pre-transplant growing: Growers who move seedlings into small intermediate pots before their final containers — common in cannabis and tomato cultivation — can continue using CANNA Start through this stage. Once the plant is transplanted to the final medium and begins active vegetative growth, it is time to switch to CANNA TERRA, COCO, SUBSTRA, or AQUA depending on the grow system.
- Propagation benches with multiple substrate types: Commercial propagation setups that run several substrate types simultaneously benefit from CANNA Start’s compatibility with rockwool, coco, peat, and jiffy formats. A single nutrient solution covers the whole bench without needing separate feed programs per substrate.
- Paired with CANNA RHIZOTONIC for root development: CANNA Start works particularly well alongside root-zone biological supplements like CANNA RHIZOTONIC. The combination of a correctly balanced nutrient (CANNA Start) and a root-stimulating supplement (RHIZOTONIC) produces strong, dense root systems that support vigorous growth after transplant.
CANNA Start vs Similar Propagation Nutrients
Several competing products target the propagation stage, but they differ in approach and nutrient scope. Understanding those differences helps growers choose the right solution for their setup.
CANNA Start vs General Hydroponics Rapid Start: General Hydroponics Rapid Start is a root-stimulating additive, not a complete nutrient solution. It is designed to encourage root initiation and early root mass development, but it does not supply the full spectrum of macro and micronutrients a seedling needs. Growers using Rapid Start still need to add a base nutrient alongside it — adding complexity and the risk of creating a solution that is too strong for cuttings. CANNA Start functions as a standalone one-part feed: it supplies complete nutrition at a strength appropriate for the propagation stage without requiring a separate base nutrient during this window.
CANNA Start vs Clonex Solution (Growth Technology): Clonex Solution is a clone-specific nutrient and rooting stimulator intended primarily for the initial strike phase — the period immediately after taking a cutting when root formation begins. It is not designed as a complete seedling nutrient for the full duration of propagation through to transplant. CANNA Start covers a broader window: from first feed of a seedling or fresh cutting all the way through to transplant into the final medium. For growers who want a single product to manage the entire propagation phase rather than a specialized clone-strike solution, CANNA Start is the more comprehensive option.
CANNA Start vs diluted vegetative nutrients: Some growers attempt to use their regular A+B base nutrients at a fraction of the standard dose to create a seedling-suitable solution. This approach has two documented problems. First, the EC drops into an acceptable range but the macro-to-micro ratio does not change — resulting in a solution that is deficient in certain micronutrients relative to seedling needs, which causes the yellowing that CANNA Start is specifically formulated to prevent. Second, even at low doses, many A+B formulas contain calcium, magnesium, and trace element concentrations that are not optimized for plugs and small cubes, leading to localized salt accumulation in a substrate with very little buffer volume. CANNA Start eliminates both issues by providing a purpose-built 2-1-2 formula rather than a diluted version of something designed for a different stage.
If you are already using a carbohydrate supplement or microbial product in your propagation routine, CANNA Start does not interfere with those additions as long as the total EC remains within the 0.7–1.3 mS/cm target range.
Compatibility & Operating Range
CANNA Start is compatible with the following substrates and setups. Knowing where it does and does not work prevents wasted product and failed propagation runs.
Compatible substrates:
- Rockwool starter cubes and slabs used for propagation
- Coco coir pellets (such as Jiffy-7 coco or similar compressed coco formats)
- Jiffy peat plugs (Jiffy-7 peat and similar compressed peat formats)
- Peat-based seed-starting mixes and propagation composts
- Most other propagation media not based on recirculating water
Not compatible with:
- Recirculating hydroponic systems (NFT, DWC, RDWC, aeroponics) — CANNA Start is not formulated for recirculating applications; use CANNA AQUA for those systems
- Clone machines (aeroponic cloners) — the nutrient balance is not appropriate for fog or mist-based aeroponic propagation
Compatible CANNA product lines after transplant: CANNA Start is designed as the entry point to the full CANNA program. Once plants are transplanted to their final medium, growers switch to the appropriate line:
- CANNA TERRA — for plants grown in soil or potting mixes
- CANNA COCO — for plants grown in coco coir substrates
- CANNA SUBSTRA / CANNA HYDRO — for plants in inert substrates such as rockwool slabs, clay pebbles, or perlite in drain-to-waste systems
- CANNA AQUA — for recirculating hydroponic systems post-transplant
Recommended pairing during propagation: CANNA RHIZOTONIC is the manufacturer-recommended companion product during the propagation phase. RHIZOTONIC is a root stimulator and plant tonic; when used alongside CANNA Start, it supports root initiation and early root mass development. The two products are compatible and are designed to be used together.
pH operating range: 5.2–6.2. The lower end of this range (5.2–5.8) is generally appropriate for rockwool; the upper end (5.8–6.2) suits peat-based media. Always measure total solution pH after adding CANNA Start to your water and adjust before feeding.
EC operating range: Target total solution EC of 0.7–1.3 mS/cm. This figure is the combined EC of the nutrient solution plus the EC of your source water. If your tap water carries a measurable EC (0.2–0.4 mS/cm is common in many regions), factor that into your calculation before comparing against the 0.7–1.3 mS/cm target. Starting at the lower end of the dose (20 ml per 10 L rather than 40 ml per 10 L) for first feeds gives you a total EC closer to 0.7–0.9 mS/cm, which is appropriate for the most sensitive first-feed window.
Note: while CANNA Start is classified in the organic nutrient category based on its substrate and use-case profile, growers should review the full technical data sheet on the CANNA website for detailed mineral composition information.
Dosing Guidelines for CANNA Start
CANNA Start is used at a fixed dose range throughout the propagation phase. There is no complex schedule to follow — the goal is to maintain a consistent, low-EC nutrient solution in the root zone from the first feed through to transplant.
Dose rate:
- Maximum dose: 40 ml per 10 L of water (equivalent to 0.5 fl oz per gallon, or a 1:250 dilution)
- First-feed dose: 20 ml per 10 L (half-strength, approximately 1:500 dilution) — recommended for the first one or two feeds, particularly with very young seedlings or freshly struck cuttings
- Standard working dose: 40 ml per 10 L once seedlings or cuttings have established the first roots and show healthy growth
Target EC and pH:
- Total solution EC: 0.7–1.3 mS/cm (this is the combined EC of the nutrient solution plus your water EC)
- pH: 5.2–6.2 (lower end for rockwool; upper end for peat and coco plugs)
Drainage: Ensure at least 10% drainage (runoff) from the substrate per watering. In small propagation plugs or cubes, this means allowing a small amount of solution to drain out of the cube after feeding. This prevents salt accumulation in the limited root-zone volume of a propagation substrate.
Feeding frequency: Propagation media has a much smaller volume than a mature plant’s container, so it dries out faster and requires more frequent, smaller feeds. Feed when the cube or plug feels light (indicating low moisture) but before it dries out completely. In a controlled propagation environment with consistent temperature and humidity, this often means once or twice daily depending on the ambient conditions.
When to stop using CANNA Start: Continue using CANNA Start until the cutting or seedling shows roots emerging from the plug or cube, and the plant is ready for transplant to its final growing medium. At that point, switch immediately to the appropriate CANNA vegetative nutrient for your chosen substrate. There is no overlap or flush phase needed between CANNA Start and the next nutrient in the program.
Storage note: Store the bottle in a dark location away from direct light and temperature extremes. UV exposure degrades iron chelates in the formula, reducing its effectiveness. A closed cabinet or dark shelf at room temperature is adequate. Once opened, use within the growing season for best results.
How to Use CANNA Start
The following steps cover a standard propagation-bench feeding routine using CANNA Start. Adjust timing and frequency based on your specific substrate, ambient conditions, and the growth stage of your plants.
- Shake the bottle before use. CANNA Start may settle during storage. Shake the 1-liter bottle firmly for 10–15 seconds before measuring your dose to ensure the formula is uniformly mixed.
- Fill your reservoir or watering container with clean water. Start with your source water at room temperature (18–22°C / 65–72°F). If you are using tap water, allow it to off-gas overnight or use a dechlorinator if your water has high chlorine levels, as chlorine can affect beneficial microbial activity in propagation media.
- Measure and add CANNA Start. Use a calibrated syringe or measuring cup. For the first one or two feeds, add 20 ml per 10 L (half-strength). For subsequent feeds once cuttings or seedlings have established initial roots, increase to 40 ml per 10 L (maximum dose). Add the nutrient directly to the water and stir or swirl to mix thoroughly.
- Check and adjust EC. Using a calibrated EC meter, measure the total solution EC. Target range: 0.7–1.3 mS/cm. If your water EC is already elevated (above 0.4 mS/cm), reduce your CANNA Start dose proportionally to keep the total solution EC within range. For a root-zone supplement added to the same feed, account for any EC contribution from that product as well.
- Check and adjust pH. After adding CANNA Start and any other products, measure the pH of the final solution. Adjust to 5.2–6.2 using a pH-up or pH-down solution. For rockwool, aim for the lower end of the range (5.2–5.8); for peat and coco plugs, aim for 5.8–6.2.
- Water the propagation substrate. Apply the solution gently to avoid disturbing seeds or dislodging newly struck cuttings. Feed until a small amount of solution drains out of the bottom of the cube or plug (at least 10% runoff). Do not allow plugs to sit in standing solution — the roots need access to oxygen as well as moisture.
- Monitor plant response. After the first few feeds, check for signs of healthy growth: roots appearing at the cube edges, green leaf colour, and upright stems with no wilting. Signs of overfeeding (leaf tip burn, leaf curl, or excessive wilting) indicate the EC is too high — flush with plain pH-adjusted water once and reduce the dose for subsequent feeds. Signs of underfeeding (pale yellow new growth, slow development) indicate you can move toward the maximum 40 ml per 10 L dose if not already there.
- Transition after transplant. Once roots are well-established and the plant is ready for its final container, stop using CANNA Start. Switch to the appropriate CANNA nutrient line: TERRA for soil, COCO for coco coir, SUBSTRA/HYDRO for inert drain-to-waste media, or AQUA for recirculating systems.
